Based on the conversations that I have with many people I work with, but also, reflecting on the numerous conversations I’ve had while writing Return on Humanity, one thing is clear….

Finding, hiring and retaining great people is more difficult, and more competitive, than ever before.

And the reason, when you step back and ask people what kind of company they want to work for, their answer always seems to be the same.

Overwhelmingly they talk about wanting to work for a ‘good’ company.

I’m curious, what does ‘good’ mean to you?

For me, ‘good’ applies as much to how a company behaves as to what it does. The values are in line with mine.

But interestingly, when people start writing their list of companies they consider to be ‘good’, it’s not easy. The list isn’t very long.

In fact, I often have people getting in touch with me asking me what companies I would recommend as a ‘good’ company.

Think about this from your own perspective.

If someone asked you to name a company that you feel a close connection to, one you admire, a company that treats you like a person behaves, could you?

It’s hard, right?

That’s because most companies have lost their way.

They’ve sacrificed the interests of their stakeholders (employees, customers, community and the environment) in favour of the bottom line. And in doing so they’ve lost what made them human in the first place.

BUT, it doesn’t need to be like this.

And in my mind, it comes down to developing the right leaders within companies to foster a culture of ‘good’.
