Everyone wants innovation. Few start here.

How did a $40,000 wooden sailboat keep beating million-dollar boats for 16 years? And what does this have to do with leadership?

I was reminded of this recently while telling this story in Denmark for a team at Arla Foods.

There’s a sailing regatta in Brazil called the Refeno. It’s a 300-nautical-mile race from Recife to the island of Fernando de Noronha across the open ocean.

For years one boat competing was a wooden trimaran called Ave Rara, and it was worth a fraction of the other boats in the regatta. Around it raced carbon-fibre boats worth millions, sometimes even skippered by Olympic sailors.

BUT…over 16 years, Ave Rara won its category 15 times, and four times crossed the finish line before any other boat, winning the Fita Azul.

How?

The difference wasn’t technology or resources. It was shared ownership.

Ave Rara was led by professional sailor Gustavo “Guga” Peixoto and a rotating crew of amateurs over the years. But one thing was constant – everyone onboard, every year, felt responsible for the same destination. They were all equally invested in a shared commitment to getting the best out of the race and specifically the boat. They all wanted to see just what was possible, and that’s just what they did. Getting there together.

Ave Rara didn’t win because it had the best boat. It won because the outcome belonged to everyone onboard.

And that’s where business often gets it wrong.

Organisations rightly invest in collaboration, creativity and innovation. But these aren’t where transformation begins. These all emerge when people feel ownership.

When someone thinks, this belongs to me too, they naturally seek perspectives beyond their own realities. Then, from there, curiosity grows. And next, creativity and innovation naturally follow.

Most organisations focus on improving the boat. BUT, the real advantage comes when everyone believes they share the destination.

Extraordinary results don’t come from better resources. They come from people who choose to own the journey, together.

If you’re exploring how to create a culture where people truly feel ownership, and then performance grows because of it, I’d love to explore how we might help.
