From 10pm to Dawn

It started as a quick visit to a family New Year’s gathering.

I arrived at 10pm, thinking that by just after midnight I’d be home. Instead, I found myself deep in conversation, still talking as dawn broke.

Around the table were:

      • A 92-year-old retired Brazilian professor of classics and literature, and author of more than 70 books.
      • Another 80-something literary icon, whose career includes over 60 works that shaped generations.
      • A woman who, at 70, fulfilled her dream of studying law—specialising in human rights for refugees of the climate crisis—and is now focused on helping to create new laws and set new precedents for those displaced by environmental change.
      • A dear friend exploring the profound risks and opportunities of AI in the legal world.

What emerged from that conversation was extraordinary.

We spoke about climate change and its legal and human ramifications, about AI’s potential to be both a game-changer and a threat when it comes to legal proceedings, and about what a return on humanity could look like across these different perspectives.

This was a reminder of the power of stepping beyond what we know.

Crossing generational boundaries to see the world through eyes that have lived longer—or differently—than ours.

Reaching outside our industries and silos to ask new questions.

Listening deeply to answers that might challenge the way we think.

The world is shifting rapidly, and we feel it everywhere—in our businesses, in our communities, in our lives.

If we’re to adapt, let alone thrive, we need to let go of the comfort of old conventions. We must expand our circles and embrace curiosity like never before.

This isn’t just a personal practice. It’s a leadership imperative.

If we want our leaders and teams to tackle today’s challenges with clarity, innovation, and empathy, we must expose them to new ways of thinking and being.

That’s the work I do. And have been doing for 20 years with TIE Leadership.

If you’re ready to take your leaders out of their comfort zones and into the spaces where transformation happens, let’s talk.
