Improve Prospect Burma’s ability to create a better future for Myanmar by opening up international education opportunities, especially to people from marginalised backgrounds and remote areas

Prospect Burma believes that the best and only way to build a better and peaceful future for the country is through opening up education opportunities to young people, to introduce them to critical thinking skills which will teach them how to think for themselves, and to equip them with the skills and qualifications the country so desperately needs.

Myanmar is a beautiful but deeply troubled country. Famous for its gorgeous landscape, it has recently become infamous for horrific human rights violations, violence, and discrimination, reported in the international press.

Without an educated population, Myanmar is lacking in the skills needed to rebuild its damaged infrastructure. Without engineers, bridges can’t be built; without ecologists, swathes of land fall prey to illegal logging; without doctors, people from remote villages die of preventable causes. Crucially, without a quality education, people don’t learn to question inequality and discrimination.

Prospect Burma began life in 1989, following the pro-democracy uprising of the previous year. When they first started out, the work focused on supporting refugees who had been forced to flee the country. They began raising funds for books and classes in refugee schools, and awarded one annual scholarship to an exiled Myanmar student to attend university.

Since then they have grown exponentially, focusing on equipping people from Myanmar with the skills and education they need to change their country for the better.

This TIE project will help Prospect Burma expand their reach by building out their alumni network; raising their profile with donors and supporters in Myanmar; and providing the staff with the ability to make the most of existing and new networks to increase funding for their programmes.

Felicia Kodderitzsch from Octopus Labs is going on TIE in 2019 to work with Prospect Burma.
