Is this what purpose is?

Purpose and giving back to communities.

Is that what purpose is?

What do you think?

While I was in London I was asked to sit on a panel at the Financial Services Forum and it was exactly this that we all debated.

And we had some really interesting thoughts coming out of this discussion.

One final comment said that in a year’s time we will no longer be talking about purpose, as we’ll be in a recession, and it will be back to business as usual and cost cutting.

But I see things differently.

Most people are aware of the importance of purpose. But in my mind, it can’t be an add on. And the companies that see it as another marketing strategy will never get it right.

The key to all of this in my mind is leadership. And leadership is what is often lacking in today’s commercial world.

The world is changing dramatically right now. The industrial age had a different kind of leadership. But command and control style leadership will no longer work in today’s world.

In this interconnected, fluid, volatile, ambiguous, uncertain and complex world we need different leaders. We need leaders that can transcend adversity, take calculated risks, be empathetic, embrace diversity, be culturally intelligent and over and above everything – be human.

We are moving from an era of competition to an era of collaboration. But how are we going to get there? Leadership. Purpose driven leadership.

We need leaders and employees of companies to be able to unearth their purpose, and then feel empowered to drive companies into the future.

And companies need to know what their purpose is so that employees and soulful leaders want to work for them.

This isn’t an add on. This is about figuring out your essence. Why your company is on this planet. And then being able to respond to the demands put on us by this modern world.

It’s about modern leadership for a modern world. And purpose has everything to do with that.

It’s time. Let’s change things! 💥 🌱✨
