Putting a Foot on the Ball

On Wednesday, the 31st of December, four of us walked down the street to the beach around the corner from home and threw flowers into the sea.

In Brazil, offering gifts to Iemanjá is a way to honour what has happened over the past year, and to set intentions for what lies ahead.

Each of us paused for a moment before tossing the flowers in, and the children absolutely loved it.

But I have been reflecting quite a bit before new years came around.

Treatment invited me to slow down over the last few months – something that felt really uncomfortable at first, but then soon revealed itself as a necessary.

As one of my advisors, Jim Carroll, reminded me a couple of months ago: great football players sometimes put their foot on the ball mid-match. They stop, look up, and then choose their next move.

I did that during the months of treatment. And then as a team, we have done just that at TIE Leadership.

It’s been quite a year on many levels. Together with our clients and partners, we’ve grown, worked deeply, and created meaningful impact. We also made space to reflect on what this work has made possible – something captured in our impact report below – using it as a collective pause before moving forward again.
