So why am I in Aarhus, Denmark, and about to give a workshop?

So why was I in Aarhus, Denmark this week and asked to give a workshop for the Insights and Analytics team at Arla Foods?

A recent study led by economist Peter Vandor highlights a compelling insight into innovation: students who studied abroad developed business ideas rated 17% higher by venture capitalists compared to their peers who remained at home. Even more striking, those who stayed at their home universities saw a decline in the quality of their ideas over the semester.

Why does this matter?

This study isn’t the reason I was there. But the message it communicates is.

You see, this study underscores a crucial principle that is the basis of what TIE Leadership is all about.

We often become prisoners of our own paradigms.

By being immersed in different environments it not only provides new information, but a fresh vantage point that can transform our thinking.

Innovation thrives when we step outside our comfort zones and challenge our assumptions.

It’s not just about acquiring new knowledge but about seeing familiar concepts in a new light.

To foster meaningful progress, we need both deep understanding and the flexibility to question and transcend existing boundaries. We must embrace the role of both insider and outsider, understanding the status quo while daring to be strategically rebellious.

The future belongs to those who can bridge disciplines, question conventions, and view obstacles not as barriers but as opportunities for innovation. And THAT’S what I inspired on Wednesday.

The workshop is part of a larger leadership development plan for 2025 aimed at transforming mindsets and behaviours to foster deeper connection across the Arla Foods business and spark fresh perspectives to fuel innovation.

This Summit was the first time many people came together across the business as a united team – and the energy was electric. The word alchemy was used a few times.

A mix of intrigue, curiosity, a desire to be better, and an excitement for what’s next.

I was truly humbled by the warmth and passion that surrounded me, and I left feeling more energised than ever for what lies ahead next year.

A huge thanks to James Prentice and Michael Swaisland for your trust in me and TIE, and to all the incredible souls at Arla—what a pleasure it was to meet all of you. I can’t wait for what’s next!

So let’s champion this growth mindset and drive forward with fresh perspectives and transformative ideas. Exciting things are coming.
